poem: August 4*

Anna's Hummingbird Copyright © 2007, Elaine R. Wilson

three dead hummers in four days
our cats become expert

they hunt to hunt
not from hunger

our guilt—the luxury
of pets, the death
of free birds

robbing a mate, a nest,
a niche—what will pollinate now?

the big cycle: the wary
will survive, reproduce

the cats will begin to miss
and pad home each night

to be fed.
