January 13*

Jack's Beach - Lummi Island

at this season                          salt-strung shore
smells are bare                       rotting kelp
close to the bone                    chalky scrape of clam shell

and sometimes the smell of just
cold       wet       grey

and from farther out
the smell of long purple-green swells
wafts of shearwater, wingtips just wet

and from farther still
(paul and colleen’s big goatdog drools)
pit roasted pig, somebody’s supper
in hawaii
