beach stones on Lummi ~ photo by Kevin Jones

we are this way:

gleaning the beach for sculpted stones
pocketing some          most go back
“need more work”

                    maybe a thousand years
                    maybe ten thousand years

          then someone can say
          it’s ready, finished

and place with the others
with fossils and shards and shells
on our window sills:

hardened prayers, icons.
