April 9*

grey whale in Penn Cove, Whidbey Island, WA

we ply the skiff three hours
into the bounce and slap
of stiff cold wind

blackmouth search:
ghost fish on the screen
but the baits roll through
untouched

we beach to collect crab gear
glance back
ecstatically aghast—
there! massive arc
of barnacled grey whale

a hundred yards out, dives

never reappears, except
in our wild stories, wild memories
