Luther Allen, author of The View from Lummi Island, will teach a poetry workshop on Saturday, November 13, 2010, to benefit the Sue Boynton Poetry Contest.
10:00am – Noon
The spatial arrangement of words, lines and stanzas on the page can amplify, enrich and deepen the power of a poem. We will explore free-form ways of distributing the parts of a poem to unveil new layers of meaning. This will be a hands-on workshop: bring two copies of a poem (less than a page long, yours or anyone’s), scissors, tape and an open mind ready for some creative play. At the end of the workshop, we will use multiple readers to experience a three-dimensional aspect of the word arrangements we have created. (All ages welcome; parent or responsible adult must accompany grade-school age child.)
The workshop, at Mindport Exhibits in downtown Bellingham, costs $32, or, if taken with the afternoon workshop, $52 for both. Fees benefit the Sue Boynton Poetry Contest and include admission to Mindport Exhibits; pay by cash or check at the workshop.
Space is limited and reservations are required: BoyntonPoetryContest AT hotmail.com or susanjer AT mac.com, 360-733-0693. Please include your name, phone number and e-mail contact information.
The Sue C. Boynton Poetry Contest is a program of Whatcom Poetry Series, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. More information about the workshops and contest is available here.
